The Wrattonbully wine region on the Limestone Coast of South Australia is an ancient place of unique geology, ideal for producing world class wines. It has a rich story, with the viticultural, agricultural, geological and historical components heavily interwoven. The ancient limestone bedrock is the common link between the caves and the vineyards, inextricably interweaving the historical archival cave system with the premium vineyards.
The limestone bedrock is the basis for the cave formation through dissolution of the calcareous material, and the vineyards have been established due to the inherent quality enhancing attributes of the limestone underlying the top layer of soil. This limestone has unique water holding capacity, is growth regulating and is sought after across the globe for premium wine grape production.
The caves are significant on an international basis, with the importance of the megafauna fossils in many of the caves acknowledged in the World Heritage listing in 1994. They provide a unique Australian story of the history of the region and continent’s fauna and flora.
